For a foam only setup by a new brand, comfortable cushion is sometimes an afterthought. That isn’t the case here with the Concept 3 and I must say that the cushion – while basic – works just fine. No pain before or after games and I even played in these past the 2 hour mark on some nights. That’s more than I can say for some adidas models and I think I may even prefer this foam – whatever it is – over adidas’ EVA.

The forefoot is minimal in the cushion department due to the Load ‘N Launch technology but it’s not minimal to where it’ll cause discomfort. Again, I’m able to play in these for more than 2 hours at a time without any pain or discomfort at all. For $175, I’d expect nothing less but at the same time… the brand relies heavily on the “banned” thing when I think most players would be more likely to purchase them if they knew these were more than just a gimmick… they can play just as good as most shoes sitting on shelves right now.

The fit and lockdown are phenomenal… plain and simple. I’ve read a couple of reviews on APL’s past models and the fit and feeling/ comfort of the upper left something to be desired (according to those reviewers) and this model – the Concept 3 – feels wonderful. No hotspots or chafing. Just a secure fit which offers plenty of support by keeping your foot attached to the foot bed properly. They are still a little tight so I would still recommend going up ½ size if you want them to fit you normally but they do break in a little bit so the sizing issue isn’t horrible.

When the Concept 1 & 2 released, I really had no interest in playing in them. Price was on the high side – they were once priced at $300 – and they were promoted as a shoe that increased your vertical instead of a performance shoe that just happened to have this Load ‘N Launch tech placed inside.

Performance wise, these are as good as they come. Very well rounded in all categories which to me is worth at least $125-150… throw in the gimmick and then I can see where the $175 comes from. These are for the curious hooper that wants to try something a bit different than the usual suspects but isn’t sure where to start since spending money on a brand you are unfamiliar with can be a gut wrenching experience. Personally, I’m happy with the purchase overall and now that I know these are great performance shoes, I can focus on figuring out if they do what they claim; can they increase your vertical or not?

This pair pays homage to Gary Payton’s Championship team, the Miami Heat, where he won his one and only ring while playing with a pretty nice roster that included Dwyane Wade, Shaq, Alonzo Mourning & one of my favorites… Jason Williams.

I think if they would have reversed the midsole colors then it would have given these a cleaner look but anything is better than the last couple of colorways we’ve recently seen.

Red is placed along the upper in gradient fashion and it doesn’t look half bad. Definitely not the brightest colorway to be unveiled but subtlety is always accepted when on-court.

The list goes pretty deep and is full of awesome sneakers (and people for that matter) which include older releases and OG’s. Surprisingly enough… I was considered an industry insider and asked which pair I planned on breaking out this summer and there was only 1 pair that I had in mind.

I’m personally not a fan of the look and color placement as they definitely give off a Soccer vibe rather than a hoop vibe. I dont mind the Soccer inspiration at all when it comes to the design but basketball shoes should look like basketball shoes… to me at lease. In case you are wondering, no… I did not like the Mambacurial Kobe 8′s.
